Westminster honors five Women of Distinction; public commenters press council on transparency and conduct

The Westminster City Council presented five Women of Distinction awards at its March 11 meeting, honoring local volunteers, educators and community leaders chosen from seven nominees. The program was adopted by unanimous resolution earlier in February establishing a citywide recognition program for Women's History Month.

Each councilmember introduced the nominee they selected and described the honoree’s service. The city manager noted the Police Department’s recent awards ceremony and listed upcoming community events, including a Coffee with a Cop (March 24), ribbon-cutting ceremonies for new playground and soccer-field improvements (April 1 and April 9), and an American Vietnam War Veterans Day recognition on March 29 at Sid Goldstein Freedom Park. Staff said veterans seeking recognition should submit requests by March 20.

During the public comment period, several residents praised the awards but others raised concerns about council conduct, transparency and appointment processes. One speaker asked why nomination paperwork for the awards had not been posted with the agenda and urged the council to post those documents; another accused a council member of repeatedly violating meeting rules and asked counsel to review records and training certificates. The critique of a council member was spoken in strong language and no formal action was taken during the meeting on those allegations.

The council approved the consent calendar and then took a short recess for refreshments and reconvened to complete the evening’s business. Mayor Nguyen reminded the public the next regular meeting is scheduled for March 25, 2026, at 6 p.m., and adjourned the session.

The meeting combined ceremonial recognitions and community updates with robust public comment calling for greater transparency and possible review of conduct-related records.
