County director asks commission to support Liberty Tire Recycling expansion before TDEC review

Director Snowden told the commission that Liberty Tire Recycling, the county’s primary waste-tire processor on Rutledge Pike, plans to expand its operation and has applied for a permit-by-rule through the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). Snowden said the solid-waste board unanimously recommended a letter from the commission supporting the application so it can proceed to TDEC technical review under the Jackson-law approval process.
Snowden said the facility handles waste tires collected at county convenience centers and that finding an alternative disposal site would be far more expensive for the county if the expansion were denied or staged elsewhere. He asked commissioners to support the approval letter.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions; no vote was taken during the work session. The item remained on the agenda for possible placement on consent or nonconsent for a future meeting when the commission will determine whether to sign the Jackson-law approval letter required before TDEC’s technical review.
The commission adjourned the work session without taking votes and went to the rules committee.
