Tech High activities director Hillary Johnson presented an informational proposal to form a cooperative boys volleyball team with Apollo, saying the joint “crush” team would boost participation and competitiveness while remaining a club this year with costs covered by fundraising and a one‑time district uniform allocation.
Hillary Johnson, Tech High School activities director, told the St. Cloud Public School District board that students and community members have grown boys volleyball from a club into a program with enough interest to pursue a cooperative between Tech and Apollo for the 2025–26 school year. "We believe it is in the best interest to co‑op in boys volleyball with Tech and Apollo this year to make it a crush team," Johnson said, describing participation last year as 24 registered students with roughly 17–18 regular attendees.
The presentation explained the co‑op would remain a club for this year while organizers collect proof of concept — participation numbers, feeder‑program development and competitive scheduling — before seeking district funding in a future year. Johnson said the program would not require district funding for coaching or busing this season: parents, community volunteers and fundraising will cover officials, some transportation and equipment. The district will allocate budget to acquire one set of unified uniforms for the new crush team.
Board members asked about Minnesota State High School League classifications, the possibility of varsity/JV tiers, and how fundraising and volunteer coaching would be sustained. Johnson said the immediate goal is to field varsity and JV matchups through scheduling with metro partners while continuing to build a sustainable feeder structure. She invited questions and said she will continue to coordinate schedules with area athletic directors.
The presentation was informational only; no district action was taken. The board thanked Johnson for the update and moved on to other agenda items.
