Gardner council honors Vietnam veterans and first responders; councilor urges support for immigrant neighbors

The Gardner City Council opened its meeting with two proclamations and brief remarks from council members.
Mayor Tom Winners read a proclamation recognizing Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29, 2026, noting national service statistics and Kansas representation on the Vietnam Memorial. The mayor also read a proclamation designating a First Responders Wellness Week to highlight the physical and mental health risks first responders face and to encourage local attention to wellness topics.
During council updates, Council member Wayne addressed Gardner’s immigrant community: "Many of you are our neighbors, our coworkers and small business owners ... you're seen, you're valued, and your voices matter," Wayne said, urging inclusivity and trust between residents and local leaders. Other council members thanked veterans for their service; one council member, speaking as a Marine Corps veteran, recalled the difficult reception veterans faced returning from Vietnam and thanked the council for the proclamation.
There was no public comment during the public-comment period. The council proceeded to regular business afterward and adjourned following updates.
