Carson council advances ordinance to prohibit sidewalk vending near events and schools

Director of Public Safety Nora Garcia told the council the ordinance would prohibit sidewalk vending within 1,000 feet of entrances to places of public assembly during events (two hours before and after events) and within 1,000 feet of school entrances while school is in session (one hour before or after). The ordinance also clarifies definitions, removes outdated code references and updates administrative enforcement procedures.
Councilmembers asked whether waivers or exceptions exist for city‑sponsored events. Garcia confirmed the ordinance contains verbiage allowing exemptions for city events so that permitted vendors can operate at official events. The council then introduced the measure for first reading by title only and waived full reading; the motion carried.
