Shawnee County commissioners approve vouchers, contracts and routine business

The Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners approved a package of routine financial and procurement items during its March 12 meeting, including voucher payments, correction orders, several departmental contracts and agreements.
Finance staff reported vouchers totaling $2,728,151.82 that included progress payments for bridge and road projects and payments for a Department of Corrections mental health facility. The Board approved the voucher list 3–0. The Board also approved correction orders and consent agenda items without objection.
Public Works requested and received approval to purchase up to 5,500 tons of trap rock from New Frontier Materials (lowest bid $68/ton) as a substitute for Haydite lightweight aggregate this year; commissioners approved the procurement 3–0 after questions about haul logistics. The Weed Department presented annual noxious weed control agreements covering townships, KDOT, the City of Topeka and watershed districts; that agreement passed 3–0, while the Board delayed an award for weed-management chemicals by one week to review a vendor question about the bidding process. The Sheriff's Office presented an updated contract with Free State Security for courthouse security through Dec. 31, 2029; the Board approved the renewal 3–0.
The Board also acknowledged a nomination of Annie Buckland to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and received administrative updates (including that the mini train at Playland will run during spring break and that the county’s behavioral health unit at the corrections facility is nearing completion). The meeting adjourned without an executive session.
