At the Lakeland Joint School District workshop, staff told trustees their insurance broker had flagged steep premium increases in the market and that districts outside the trust were seeing increases as large as 30–50 percent. Lakeland staff said, because the district participates in a trust, the district’s exposure might be smaller but preliminary numbers indicate a possible 15–20 percent increase that could materially reduce employees’ take‑home pay without offsetting actions.
Staff reminded trustees the district is already subsidizing benefits and that the negotiated agreement currently references a district contribution of up to $860 per month toward medical, dental and vision for eligible full‑time certificated employees. Trustees asked staff to clarify language so contributions for part‑time employees are proportionate to FTE and to present scenarios showing the effect of premium increases on district subsidy levels and employees’ net pay.
Staff also said they will solicit bids outside the trust to compare options, but cautioned that moving outside the trust carries long‑term risk if the district’s own claims experience rises. No benefits policy changes were adopted at the workshop; trustees directed staff to return with updated cost comparisons and clearer contract language for benefits contributions.
