County eyes Riverbend Park dock, boat‑ramp dredging and other SPLOST/Tourism projects; bids to follow

County Manager Thomas Weaver told the Commission during the Aug. 5 regular meeting and the Aug. 25 work session that staff will bring project estimates for several SPLOST and tourism proposals, including a dock at Riverbend Park, restrooms at the King Street basketball court, and a Welcome Center at City Hall.

Weaver said staff contacted a dredging company about removing sand at the Riverbend boat ramp where boats enter the water but cautioned that U.S. Army Corps of Engineers scheduling can be lengthy; county staff will evaluate whether a local contractor can complete a lower‑cost dredge sooner. Public Works Director Tom Bickel and contractor representatives briefed the Commission on bids and recommended follow‑up procurement steps for any project that exceeds county procurement thresholds.

At the Aug. 25 work session staff presented updated quotes for a Riverbend fishing dock and advised that, because of the project’s size, the county should put construction out to bid. Commissioners expressed a preference for the larger dock but asked staff to prepare formal bid documents and cost estimates for the next meeting.

Weaver also asked that water and parks staff be included in upcoming discussions; staff said they would return with estimated costs, possible funding sources (SPLOST/tourism) and draft procurement schedules. The Commission did not take a final vote on procurement at regular session; next steps include posting specifications and scheduling bid openings if the Commission approves formal solicitations.
