Council advances HVAC preventive-maintenance contract and portable traffic-signal purchase for first readings

The Norton City Council added two procurement ordinances to the March 16 agenda for first reading.

Miss Lee presented Ordinance No. 31-20-26 to authorize HVAC preventative maintenance services from K Company, not to exceed $15,348. Council members said the contract would cover the administration building, community center, the fire station and the service garage; members argued preventive maintenance avoids larger, costlier equipment failures. Miss Lee moved to add the ordinance for first reading with intent to waive the third reading on April 6.

Mister Towsley presented Ordinance No. 33-20-26 to purchase two portable temporary traffic-signal systems for the service department from Bain and Enterprises at a cost not to exceed $58,000. He said the city has a $40,000 grant toward the purchase, which would leave an estimated city share of $18,000 and free up two service workers during lane-closure jobs.

Why it matters: both items authorize city purchases that affect ongoing operations and maintenance. HVAC maintenance aims to avoid significant equipment repair costs; portable traffic signals are a capital purchase partially offset by grant funding.

Next steps: both ordinances were added for first reading at the meeting; staff indicated the HVAC item will be reviewed by the appropriate subcommittee and the vehicle/equipment purchase will follow the usual procurement steps and grant acceptance process prior to final council action.
