District urges regular attendance, reminds families to file meal application by Oct. 31

A staff member for the Jefferson Elementary School District urged families to make daily attendance a priority and reminded them that the district’s primary funding is tied to average daily attendance and enrollment.
“Every day your child is in school makes a difference,” the staff member said, adding that regular attendance helps students learn, develop good habits and allows the district to provide supports students need.
The speaker said the district’s main funding source is based on the average of daily attendance and enrollment for the year, and encouraged families to help the district secure resources by ensuring students attend regularly and are counted in attendance.
The staff member also reminded families of an Oct. 31 deadline to submit the annual meal application. Although the district currently provides free lunch to every student through a state-funded universal meals program, the form must be completed each year to ensure the program and related funding continue. “Filling out the form only takes a few minutes and also helps provide extra funding for programs, enrichment, and resources for all students,” the staff member said.
Families who submit the form by Oct. 31 will be entered into a prize drawing for items that the district said include a bicycle, AirPods and gift cards. The district acknowledged Kids First Education Foundation for donating and collecting the prizes and for its ongoing support of district schools.
The staff member noted that the superintendent’s budget and facilities advisory committee, comprised of representatives from the district’s schools, meets monthly; recent meetings occurred on Sept. 3 and Oct. 1. Recaps of those meetings are available on the district’s website and in its newsletters.
For questions about attendance, the meal application or committee summaries, families were asked to contact their school’s office. The announcement closed with a thank-you for families’ support of regular attendance and timely form submissions.
