Fairfield County leaders report WIOA audit, strong Career Expo turnout and workforce program waiver

County administration reported completion of the state WIOA audit, a record Career Expo with 67 businesses and more than 200 Pickerington students, and approval of an Engineering Tech program waiver by the Ohio Department of Higher Education. Department heads also updated the board on road patching, a pending design contract and festival emergency planning.
County Administrator Aundrea Cordle told the Board on March 24 that Fairfield County completed its first state Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) audit in 10 years.
Economic & Workforce Development Director Rick Szabrak reported the Workforce Center’s Career Expo drew 67 businesses and more than 200 Pickerington students, the largest turnout for the event to date. Szabrak also said the Ohio Department of Higher Education approved a waiver for an Engineering Tech program at the Workforce Center. Szabrak described modest softening in some labor markets such as manufacturing and healthcare, while noting hiring remains ongoing and some support roles are being automated.
Engineer Jeremiah Upp reported his office continues to patch roads damaged during winter. Utilities Director Tony Vogel said his office will present a design contract on the next agenda and is collaborating with the Village of Millersport on a new wastewater facility design. EMA & Facilities Director Jon Kochis said discussions continue with the Lancaster Festival on emergency operations planning. IT Director Dan Neeley said he attended a tech summit and connected with other government IT leaders. JFS Director Corey Clark said JFS staff, including Sarah Fortner, will present at an Ohio Coalition for Adult Protective Services conference. Deputy County Administrator Jeff Porter reported the county dog shelter population remains lower and staff are optimistic that trend will continue.
The board heard these updates during the review portion of its March 24 meeting; the items did not require separate votes during the session.
