Kewanee council approves fence and accessory-structure variances, special-use permit and mayoral appointments

The council unanimously approved Bill 25-95, granting a variance to exceed the maximum allowed height for a privacy fence at 624 South Chestnut St. Councilmember Komnick moved approval and Councilmember Baker seconded; the motion passed 5-0. Councilmember Cernovich asked what material would be allowed for the increased height; the homeowner said they planned to use the same type of vinyl used on the existing fence.
The council then approved Bill 25-96, a variance to the maximum allowed height for an accessory structure at 911 Simpson Ave. Councilmember Baker moved and Councilmember Cernovich seconded the motion; it passed 5-0 with no discussion.
Council also granted Bill 25-97, a special-use permit for James Steinke, doing business as Chrome Gypsy Tattoo, for property at 600 N. Lexington Ave. Councilmember Colomer moved approval and Councilmember Cernovich seconded; the motion passed 5-0.
The body approved Bill 25-98, a resolution affirming the mayor’s recommendations for appointments to various commissions and boards. The resolution was moved by Councilmember Colomer, seconded by Councilmember Baker, and passed 5-0.
In addition to the zoning and appointments items, the council approved payroll for the pay period ending Oct. 18 in the amount of $261,882.96 and authorized payment of bills totaling $274,634.81 (motions passed 5-0). During the meeting City Clerk Kasey Mitchell swore in Andrew Carlson as the newest Kewanee police officer; he was pinned by his chief.
The meeting concluded after brief council communications and an announcement from the Cemetery Division that the annual fall cleanup runs through Oct. 31, 2025, and that residents should refrain from placing new decorations until the cleanup is finished. The council adjourned at 8:06 p.m.
