A board-appointed committee recommended that the Marysville Joint Unified School District sell three underused properties, the committee’s chair said at the Aug. 26 meeting.
Jennifer Posalio introduced Monica Oakes, who said the committee reviewed district sites and focused on three smaller properties that have not housed students in years. Oakes said the district bears insurance, trash removal, vandalism and fire risk costs on the sites and that they were more of a burden than usable space. “The committee recommended to sell those 3 properties,” she told the board and offered to answer questions.
Oakes said the committee met three times and represented a cross-section of the district. No formal motion or board vote on the committee’s recommendation was recorded at the Aug. 26 meeting; the presentation concluded after board members thanked the committee for its work.
Why it matters: Selling underused property could reduce district maintenance and liability costs and free funds for operational priorities, but would require subsequent board action to authorize any sale or disposition.
What’s next: The committee report was placed on the record; additional staff recommendations or an agenda item for board action would be required for any sale to proceed.
