Commissioners pledge $7,000 to help Knox Middle School PTO secure $50,000 matching grant

Members of the Knox Middle School PTO, led by Elizabeth Wallen, asked commissioners for a one-time $1,500 contribution to help unlock a $50,000 matching grant that requires the PTO to raise $50,000 by April 1. Wallen said the PTO had raised about $34,000 and had community commitments including a $10,000 community foundation gift, a $5,000 commitment from Hoosier Solar and other local donations.
Commissioners discussed options, including splitting the remaining shortfall among members to avoid the PTO missing the matching window. After an initial motion to provide $1,500, commissioners discussed the gap and ultimately approved a $7,000 contribution to ensure the PTO could meet the match deadline and proceed with the planned playground/pavilion project. The PTO representatives said the funds would be used for play equipment, a pavilion, picnic tables and installation; they said construction would proceed this summer if the match is secured.
The commission recorded voice votes approving the funding and directed the PTO to coordinate paperwork with county staff (Michaeline) to process the grant and voucher.
