School leaders and district administrators reported on student supports, staffing and enrollment at the March 11 board meeting.
Arroyo del Norte Elementary principal Dr. Anthony Medina described social‑emotional learning and restorative‑justice initiatives, student requests for more therapy and culturally relevant meals, a partnership with a youth basketball league, an after‑school reading program and a community closet for coats and food. He said the school’s average weekly attendance was about 92.4% and that organizers are using tiered interventions to improve chronic absenteeism.
In human resources, Dr. William Royal described process improvements: DocuSign onboarding, more automated applicant acknowledgements, a prospective Frontline HR module for national recruitment, and efforts to reduce application‑to‑hire turnaround time. He noted NMPED licensing delays can slow hires and described outreach at regional recruiting fairs.
Superintendent Antonio Layton reported district enrollment rose by seven students to 1,732 and that district attendance is at 91.1% year to date. He thanked principals and staff and said the district is exploring data tools that map attendance by neighborhood to allow targeted outreach.
Board members praised volunteers, community partnerships and attendance coaches and asked for continued updates on recruitment, attendance strategies and student supports.
