Student board member urges Santa Paula students to bring concerns, build school spirit

Nylina Magana, a senior and student board member at Santa Paula High School, told the Santa Paula Unified board she represents students across the district and wants her peers to bring concerns and ideas to her.

"My name is Nylina Magana, and I am a senior and cheerleader here at Santa Paula High School, as well as a student board member," Magana said, describing how her role as a cheerleader helped her develop the school spirit and community focus that led her into student leadership.

Magana said she meets with the schools she represents to gather concerns and report them to the board. She also said she meets with the superintendent every morning before school to review what she will report at meetings and to coordinate topics, and that she attends board meetings every other Wednesday to present student perspectives.

"I encourage every Santa Paula High School student, if you have any concerns, come talk to me. I'm happy to hear, and I will bring it up to the board," Magana said, urging students to use her office to raise issues or suggest changes.

Magana framed cheerleading as a way to understand student needs and to foster broader participation: she said cheerleaders help bring out school spirit and that she treats student outreach as part of building a districtwide community. She added that she reports on both student and sometimes staff input to the board.

Magana did not propose formal motions or request specific board action in this statement; she presented her role as a channel for student feedback and encouraged ongoing contact from students.
