Ascension Parish Council approves tax-election call, appointments and settlement agreements

The Ascension Parish Council on March 19 approved a slate of administrative and financial actions, including a resolution calling a June 27, 2026 special election to renew a 5-mill ad valorem tax for Road Lighting District No. 7 and multiple personnel appointments to volunteer boards and commissions.
Chair Milossohn read a resolution ordering the special election that would renew a five‑mill tax on assessed property values in Road Lighting District No. 7 for a 10‑year period to pay for acquisition, improvement, operation and maintenance of the district’s road lighting system. Councilmember Warner moved to approve the resolution; Joseph seconded. With no objections, the motion carried by voice vote.
The council also considered a resolution concerning alleged BASF noncompliance with industrial tax exemption contracts for project year 2023 and voted to forward the council’s recommendation to the state Board of Commerce and Industry. The discussion clarified that council staff characterized the matter primarily as missed deadlines and paperwork in some contract filings; the council nevertheless approved the recommendation after a motion by Alonzo and a second by Hillensbeck.
During the consent and personnel portions of the meeting, the council approved multiple appointments and reappointments (animal service board, planning and zoning commission, fire protection, and other local boards). Personnel Committee Chair Dennis Collin read the committee’s recommendations; each nominee was approved following motion and second with no recorded objections.
The council entered executive session to finalize settlements in two matters, including Demko v. Ascension Parish (Suit No. 134841 Division D) and a claim discussed as LaWanna Brown/LCA 0035708. After reconvening, councilmembers moved to approve the settlements as discussed in executive session; both motions were made and carried with no objections recorded.
Council members introduced several ordinances (rezoning, updates to drainage district language, administrative changes naming the parish president as administrator for certain districts, authorization to acquire drainage servitudes with specified parcel prices, surplus equipment, and temporary staggered board terms). Introductions require later readings or administrative follow-up; no final votes on ordinances were taken at this meeting.
