The Barstow Unified School District Board of Trustees on Jan. 14 approved multiple personnel actions to address staffing needs across the district, including a new Transitional Kindergarten (TK) certificated position, the establishment of paraeducator positions at several sites and two campus safety assistant positions, and the hiring of a nutrition services operations manager.
Mister Ortiz, reporting for the personnel commission, said the TK teacher position is being established “in anticipation of rising enrollment and students in the PK classrooms,” and that principals requested the additional paraeducator roles to support math intervention programs and Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) goals. Ortiz told trustees the campus safety assistant positions are intended to support high‑school security needs and are funded using equity multiplier dollars assigned to schools.
The board introduced and approved the items after staff described recruitment and hiring timelines. Ortiz said testing capacity at the Adult Education site is constrained by available computers — “we test at the adult ed and the number of PCs or stations that they have is 13” — and staff plan to purchase laptops to expand testing and speed up candidate processing.
The board also approved the employment of Cindy Lattif as nutrition services operations manager. Mister Beaton introduced Lattif and said of her background, “She has over 30 years experience in the food service world.” Lattif spoke briefly about her experience and said she plans to work for the district until she retires.
Trustees discussed procedural steps for moving positions through posting, transfer and interviews. For paraeducator roles, Ortiz said the district will do group interviews and issue conditional offers on the spot for qualified candidates; for campus safety assistants, interviews could begin roughly three weeks after posting. The board moved and approved the personnel items during the meeting.
What happens next: Human resources staff will post or transfer vacancies, schedule interviews and proceed with conditional offers and onboarding; the district will report back as the recruitments progress.
