City staff and guests updated the council on community events, a McDaniel College announcement about a planned new School of Business and Technology by 2027, solar crosswalk warning systems installed near the library and elementary school, and resurfacing of Sherwood and Albion parking lots beginning March 16.
The Westminster council received a series of department and community updates, including a presentation from a McDaniel College official, announcements about pedestrian-safety upgrades and parking-lot resurfacing, and a planning update on zoning and special-exception approvals.
Jenny Glennon, assistant vice president for administration and government relations at McDaniel College, told the council the college hosted hundreds of admitted students recently and that McDaniel is working to open a new School of Business and Technology by 2027, with programs in accounting, business administration, computer science, economics, entrepreneurship, international business, marketing and management. Glennon also announced alumni weekend (April 17) and an academic symposium on May 4 that are open to the community.
City staff (Miss Imhofs) reported Wakefield Valley Park saw heavy use and reminded residents of the Celtic Cancer run and festival schedule, including race start times and complimentary trolley service. Staff also reported installation of solar-powered crosswalk warning systems in front of the library and Westminster Elementary School to improve visibility at mid-block crossings and said the city hopes to extend similar systems to other mid-block locations in the future.
Public works staff announced resurfacing of the Sherwood and Albion parking lots beginning Monday, March 16; work is expected to take about a week. No-parking signage will be posted starting 5 p.m. the preceding Saturday, and staff will notify downtown businesses and direct patrons to the Longwell Garage while lots are closed.
Planning staff reported the Court of Zoning Appeals conditionally approved Case 2601 (an application from Carroll Community College for a trade-school special exception at 110 Airport Drive), the Historic District Commission meeting on March 4 was canceled for lack of applications, and the Planning and Zoning Commission is tentatively scheduled to review revised elevations for a proposed medical office/day-care project on March 19.
Separately, the council heard a public-safety update noting an Ulta Beauty store theft valued at $1,528.75 on Feb. 26; investigators identified suspects associated with an organized retail-theft ring and the Westminster Police Department is working with the state's attorney's office on charges.
The meeting concluded after a brief public-comment period and adjourned.
