Westminster council adopts resolution designating snow-emergency streets

The mayor and common council of Westminster on Monday adopted Resolution 26-09, formally designating a set of snow-emergency streets to improve snow removal and emergency access during winter weather.

Deputy Chief Jason Jones told the council the authority for the designation comes from the City of Westminster code. “Pursuant to City Of Westminster code 1 55 4 4, the mayor and common council are granted the authority to designate streets, portions of streets, as snow emergency streets by resolution,” he said, adding that the director of public works may declare a snow emergency when two inches or more of snow accumulates and that parked vehicles must be removed from designated streets to allow snow removal and emergency access.

Councilmember Pecoraro, who moved adoption, said the policy had been tested during a recent snow event and helped clear Main Street and other arteries more quickly, improving access for downtown businesses. “It made it a lot easier to move around town,” Pecoraro said, calling the policy a useful addition to the city’s toolset. The mayor said the designation positions Westminster as a regional leader in proactive winter response.

The resolution lists the streets to be treated as snow-emergency routes in the meeting packet; Deputy Chief Jones told the council staff would post and enforce notice and removal requirements when a declaration is made. A voice vote was called; the chair reported the ayes carried and the resolution was adopted.

The council took no additional action beyond adopting the resolution. The meeting adjourned with the next regular meeting scheduled for March 23, 2026.
