Westmoor student honored as district Student of the Year for academic progress and leadership

The board recognized Westmoor High School senior Abraham Algaipí as the district Student of the Year, highlighting his academic progress and leadership after transferring from Jefferson in spring 2024. School leaders told the board that Algaipí’s first language is Arabic and that he required significant academic and social support when he arrived.

The director who presented the honor described Algaipí’s transformation and credited school staff and social‑work supports for his progress. "He has shown commitment and a fervor for his classes and his studies," the director said, applauding Algaipí’s growth into a respectful and responsible student and "a model for his classmates." The student accepted the recognition and thanked teachers and family for their support.

Board members and community representatives joined in praising the student’s leadership, specifically noting his participation in a youth health class that helped his peers. One board member said the achievement underscores the district’s efforts to create spaces "for positive change in students’ lives." The honoree was invited to the front of the room for a photograph; the ceremony included several short tributes from teachers who had worked with him.

The recognition was ceremonial; no further board action was required. The board moved on to other agenda items following the photo and comments.
