Suffield Board elects Maureen Sattan chair; vice chair seat decided 5-4

Maureen Sattan, who was nominated by Board member Sam Toskin, was elected chair of the Suffield Board of Education by a unanimous roll-call vote at the board’s Dec. 1 meeting.

The leadership vote came at the start of the regular meeting at the Suffield High School Library Media Center. Toskin nominated Sattan; Sattan accepted the nomination, and the board moved to close nominations before conducting the roll-call, which resulted in a 9-0-0 vote to elect Sattan as chair.

The vice chair contest was competitive. Sattan nominated Board member Melissa Finnigan, and Brian Fry nominated Board member Debra Dudack. After the board closed nominations and held a roll-call vote, Dudack was elected vice chair by a 5-4 margin. The minutes record that Dudack, Fry, Mol, Rose and Rossi voted for Dudack while Finnigan, Sattan, Sparzo and Toskin voted for Finnigan.

James Mol nominated Gianna Rossi for secretary; Rossi accepted and was elected secretary in a unanimous 9-0-0 vote.

Why it matters: Board leadership sets committee assignments and helps shape priorities for the coming year, including decisions on educational specifications and capital projects tied to state reimbursement timelines. The newly elected leadership will preside over expected votes in January and March on facility Ed Specs and related grant applications.

Board motions: The minutes list motions to close nominations and to elect officers, followed by roll-call tallies for each position. The vice chair vote was the only split decision recorded in the officer elections.
