Jail harm-reduction vending machine installed; staff working to add same‑day assessments with Arbor Place

The CJCC Executive/Operations Committee received updates that a harm‑reduction vending machine has been installed and stocked in the county jail lobby, providing 24/7 access to Narcan, wound kits, personal‑hygiene items, emergency blankets and other supplies at no charge.

Sarah (CJCC staff) said the machine was bought and installed under local opioid‑settlement funding with matching support from a Vital Strategies grant. She noted a similar vending unit is in the public‑health lobby but has limited hours tied to the government center schedule; the jail lobby machine provides round‑the‑clock access. "Chief Deputy Moltoff was helpful in purchasing some bags for bulky items and ordering signage so it's clear the supplies are free," Sarah said. She described remaining logistics such as configuring packaging to fit the refurbished spiral mechanism.

Sarah also reported Human Services is working on a contract with Arbor Place to provide same‑day behavioral‑health assessments for people Project Hope officers encounter in the community. Under the proposed arrangement, officers could bring someone over during a scheduled window (for example, a weekly drop‑in hour) to receive an on‑the‑spot assessment instead of waiting weeks for an appointment.

Sarah said the existing 'Bridal Strategies' grant ended Dec. 31 and a pending contract would allow peer‑support hours to continue through July; a separate new grant may extend that coverage through December. The peer‑support contract remains under review by corp counsel.

Committee members asked logistical questions and were supportive of measures that expand access to treatment and harm‑reduction supplies.
