County authorizes federal community-project funding application to renovate South County Health Services building

The Deschutes County Board of Commissioners authorized the health services department on March 11 to apply for and accept federal community project funding to renovate the South County Health Services building. Shannon Bistraragas, the county’s behavioral health director, told the board the renovation would increase accessibility (bring the building into ADA compliance), reconfigure treatment rooms and expand space to provide intensive outpatient services locally in La Pine.
Bistraragas requested authorization to apply for $1,339,000 in federal community project funding to support an $1.8 million renovation. She said the work would remove a lift that currently consumes space, add an ADA-compliant restroom and improve privacy and program flow; if the county does not receive the federal funds the project would be paid from behavioral health reserves. She also said staff planned to apply to the rural health transformation program in April as a second potential funding source.
Commissioners voted to authorize the application and to provide a chair-signed letter of support. The motion carried unanimously.
