Canton staff brief council on Cherokee County road-resurfacing agreement; bids due April 6

Miss Penley, public works staff, briefed the council on the proposed intergovernmental agreement with Cherokee County for road resurfacing.
Penley said this is the third year Canton is participating in the county program and corrected the packet’s cost estimate from about $1,800,000 to approximately $1,300,000. “The roads are correct, but in the packet, it talks about it's gonna be closer to, like, $1,800,000. It's actually ... it's 1,300,000.0,” Penley said. She reported the list covers about 4.48 miles of roads and that bids are due back on April 6.
Penley described an optional roadway—Martin Luther King Jr. Drive—kept on the list because the city is uncertain about the scope and timing of a separate RCAH project at the high school. Council members pressed staff on approving an agreement that relied on bids that were not yet returned; staff said the council can approve the intergovernmental agreement with a not-to-exceed amount and the mayor would sign the final agreement based on the actual bid numbers returned on April 6.
Penley also said the department is using a new road-assessment AI tool to select candidate segments and that she will return with firmer numbers at the April 2 meeting. No formal vote on the final agreement was taken March 19; staff will bring an action item once bids are received and the final contract price is clear.
