Springfield swears in volunteer First Aid Squad officers; squad reports 2,300 calls in 2025

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Township Committee swore in officers of the Springfield First Aid Squad for 2026 and listened as squad leadership described operational capacity and needs.
Elizabeth J. Fritzen, identified during the meeting as president of the Springfield First Aid Squad, thanked the mayor and township committee for the recognition and said the squad answered over 2,300 calls in 2025, added 18 new members and 11 newly certified EMTs, and now fields about 70 EMTs. She said the squad expects delivery of a fourth ambulance "any day now" to expand response capacity and emphasized that volunteers and public donations keep the squad viable.
"Any kind of support that the residents lend to us monetarily is important," Fritzen said, noting that small donations help buy medical supplies and fund training.
Committee members and the mayor praised the volunteers. Officials encouraged residents to consider volunteering or supporting the squad financially and thanked family members in the audience.
The swearing-in and recognition took place during the committee's regular meeting and preceded business including ordinance readings and an executive session.
The committee also urged residents to consult posted township resources about DPW services and volunteer opportunities; the administrator noted the new sidewalk completion and ongoing street and storm‑basin maintenance.
