Pierce County authorizes staff to begin annexation talks with Gig Harbor

Pierce County on March 10 adopted R2026-108 to initiate annexation negotiations for unincorporated urban areas adjacent to the city of Gig Harbor.
Mike Krueger of Planning and Public Works told the council the resolution directs the department to commence negotiations with Gig Harbor under RCW 35A.14.460. He said the county comprehensive plan and Countywide Planning Policies identify approximately 1,875 acres in 11 neighborhoods adjacent to Gig Harbor as potential annexation areas and noted that annexation remains a multi-step process: interlocal agreements, city ordinances and a 45-day post-ordinance date after which the action may be subject to referendum.
Council member Denson thanked staff and Gig Harbor leadership for collaborative planning and emphasized that the city drives annexation timing; county staff will engage as partners and prepare interlocal agreements as the city is ready. The council voted 7–0 to adopt the resolution.
What happens next: Planning and Public Works will negotiate interlocal agreements with the city of Gig Harbor as guided by the comprehensive plan and the Growth Management Act; any specific annexations would require subsequent legislative action by both jurisdictions and are subject to referendum procedures described by state law.
