At its March 9 meeting, the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District board received an update on Assembly Bill 3074 and approved routine calendar and personnel items.
AB 3074 update: Teacher Renee Chance briefed trustees on AB 3074, which prohibits use of certain terms and human imagery without written consent from a federally recognized tribe. Chance said the district will keep its "Warrior" name but must remove the term "tribe" from student learning outcomes and will omit headdresses or human-characteristic imagery from yearbooks, printed shirts and social media going forward; existing floor imagery or exchanged chiefs are grandfathered until replaced. The presentation included three internal meetings and outreach to area tribes; the superintendent said the district is awaiting responses from two tribes.
Routine approvals and awards: The board approved a resolution recognizing staff appreciation days in April (instructional aides April 1; library clerks April 2; vice principals April 15; administrative professionals April 22). Trustees also approved the 2026-27 school calendar with July 3, 2026 added as a holiday and adopted the consent calendar.
Personnel contract: The board approved a contract for speech therapist Bibiano Aranda for the 2026-27 school year; the contract places Aranda on management salary schedule step 1 at $102,804, effective July 1, 2026.
Attendance awards: District staff announced February attendance awards: staff attendance award to Bonita Elementary; most improved student attendance to Bonita Elementary; best student attendance to Hunt Elementary.
Votes at a glance: - Approve agenda: motion carried (recorded aye votes: Mister Rock; Miss Gonzales; Missus Rooney; Miss Rivas; mister Gueloz). - Approve consent calendar: adopted by roll-call (recorded ayes on the record). - Action Item A (Resolution 25-26 #10 recognizing staff appreciation days): approved (roll-call recorded ayes). - Action Item B (2026-27 calendar with July 3 holiday): approved (recorded ayes including Mister Watt, Miss Gonzales, Miss Rhee, Miss Rivas). - Action Item C (Speech therapist contract for Bibiano Aranda, effective 07/01/2026 at $102,804): approved (recorded ayes).
Why it matters: AB 3074 requires districts to document tribal consent for certain names and imagery; the district's early outreach and curriculum updates aim to avoid noncompliance and preserve longstanding imagery that is grandfathered until replaced.
Next steps: The superintendent said staff will follow up with tribes and return with any necessary revisions to student learning outcomes and materials.
