The Placentia‑Yorba Linda Unified School District Board approved a six‑year adoption of Wonders (McGraw Hill), Maravillas (for dual‑language), and WonderWorks (intervention) as the district's K–5 English language arts and ELD core materials.
District staff described a year‑long adoption process that included a steering committee, pilots at 15 elementary schools (37 teachers), surveys of students, teachers and caregivers, and classroom evidence. Curriculum leaders said Wonders consistently rose to the top in teacher evaluations for engagement, differentiation and built‑in supports for multilingual learners.
The cost of the adoption was presented as $2,908,284 and will be funded from restricted lottery funds designated for instructional materials; the package includes student consumables for the full six‑year cycle. The district said it will provide teacher training starting immediately after board approval, with additional sessions in April, May, June and ongoing professional learning during implementation.
Trustees emphasized that curriculum adoption is only one part of improvement and pledged to monitor implementation and teacher supports. The motion to adopt carried unanimously (5‑0 with the student board member voting yes).
What happens next: Ed Services will implement a training calendar, provide teacher supports and monitor implementation via six‑week teacher surveys and additional supports identified through teacher feedback.
