Longwood approves FDOT agreement for SR 434 work, adopts final-year budget adjustments and appoints magistrate

At its Feb. 2 meeting the Longwood City Commission approved several routine but substantive items: a funded agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation for work on State Road 434, a final year-in adjustment to the fiscal 2024–25 budget, the appointment of a special magistrate for trespass-warning appeals, and the initiation of a citywide strategic planning process.
The commission adopted Resolution No. 261713 to execute an agreement with FDOT covering safety improvements, signal upgrades and pedestrian work along SR 434, with staff noting a cost advantage from having the DOT include the work in its contract. Public Works Director Chad Smith described the work as resurfacing and signal/pedestrian improvements that will piggyback onto DOT's contract. The resolution passed 4–0.
Finance Director (role) presented the final-year budget adjustment for fiscal 2024–25 — a common practice to reconcile budgeted numbers with actuals prior to audit — and the commission approved that item by roll call (4–0).
The city attorney recommended Holly New of Shepherd Smith Hannon Brackens to serve as special magistrate for hearing trespass-warning appeals; the commission approved the appointment 4–0.
The commission also authorized staff to initiate a 3–5 year strategic planning process, scheduling a public workshop for March 3 (8 a.m.–noon) to identify priorities and align future budgets and capital planning.
Next steps: staff will execute the FDOT agreement, proceed with closeout and audits for the fiscal year, implement the magistrate appointment, and prepare workshop materials for the March strategic-planning session.
