Calhoun County commissioners recognized Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month during their March 12 meeting and heard several community updates.
Commissioner Howell presented a proclamation declaring March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to representatives from The Arc of Calhoun and Cleburne Counties. Pati Tiller, Executive Director of The Arc, thanked the commission for its continued support of the organization’s mission.
During public comment, Richard Rybka of Coosa Riverkeepers reported that a recent Harts Ferry Park cleanup was successful and outlined plans for ongoing maintenance. Shannon Jenkins, director of the United Way, thanked the commission for support of Martha’s Hope and said grants account for $400,000 of the organization’s $960,000 annual budget, with sponsorships covering most remaining expenses. Sheriff Hurst recognized newly appointed Chief Deputy Carl Moses. Haley Horne, a former resident of a recovery home, described rebuilding her life, completing college and now working in social work; she promoted Calhoun County Recovers’ upcoming meeting on April 8 and collaboration with JSU on an April 24 event.
The commission received the remarks and did not take further action during the meeting.
