During the audience-to-be-heard period on Feb. 18, Debbie Winer thanked the council for a $400 community grant supporting early-childhood literacy work. Winer said the grant will help provide monthly, age-appropriate books to children enrolled in the program.
Winer told the council that 403 children in Tavares have received books through the program over the past two and a half years and that 134 children have completed the program and moved on to kindergarten. She provided the council with a quarterly year-end report and offered to answer questions from members.
Why it matters: Small community grants help local nonprofit programs sustain outreach to children and families; council members accepted the report and thanked Winer for the update.
Next steps: Winer left printed material with the clerk; council did not take further action at the meeting.
