Tavares council accepts FDLE grant to buy police drone; no local match required

The Tavares City Council on Feb. 18 accepted a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) grant of up to $25,000 that staff said will be used to buy an unmanned aerial system—commonly called a drone—for the police department.
City staff told the council the FDLE award requires no matching funds. "Acceptance of this grant will allow the department to purchase the drone that meets all the various facilities for service operations," a staff member said. Staff said earlier outreach and coordination with vendors informed the department’s equipment selection.
Council members asked few questions and moved to approve the resolution. The motion passed 5-0.
Why it matters: Officials said the equipment will enhance the department’s operational capabilities and community safety by adding a remote aerial tool for incident response and scene assessment; staff noted there is no matching-fund obligation.
Next steps: Staff will proceed with procurement consistent with grant rules and return to council if purchases require additional approvals.
