Commission recommends 9.504 mills proposed millage rate; hearings rescheduled after ad error

The Cusseta–Chattahoochee County Commission on Sept. 2 voted to recommend a proposed millage rate of 9.504 mills for 2025, an increase of 1.25 mills from the prior rate of 8.254. The motion to recommend the proposed millage passed unanimously; commissioners emphasized the action was a recommendation to set public-hearing dates rather than a final adoption of the millage.
County Manager Thomas Weaver provided the staff estimate included in the record: for a homestead property with a fair-market value of $100,000, the increase would be an estimated $50 per year; for property assessed at $50,000 the increase was estimated at $25 per year. The commission recorded that the school millage would remain unchanged.
The commission initially set public hearings for Sept. 17 (10 a.m. and 6 p.m.) and Sept. 24 (6 p.m.) and scheduled a called meeting on Sept. 24 to vote after the hearings. At a subsequent work session on Sept. 22, Weaver said the county’s advertisement in the newspaper did not meet Department of Revenue requirements and the hearings were being rescheduled to Oct. 1 (10 a.m. and 6 p.m.) and Oct. 8 (10 a.m.); the earlier Sept. 24 hearing was canceled and will be replaced with the rescheduled dates and advertised again.
Procedure and next steps: the commission’s Sept. 2 vote recommended the proposed rate and established hearing dates; final adoption requires the public hearings and a subsequent vote after required public notice. The county manager said the department will republish the advertisement to meet state requirements.
At the Sept. 2 meeting the millage recommendation motion was made by Commissioner Jason Frost, seconded by Commissioner Damon Hoyte, and passed unanimously.
