Committee approves $2.14 million credit by removing selected stadium repair line items

The Land and Facilities Management Committee on March 18 approved a change order that eliminates selected bid line items on stadium repair work, producing a credit of $2,135,999.79 for the Lafourche Parish School District.
The change order was presented by Michael Vado of Vado Engineers, who said topside and underside chipping and initial repair-material placement are underway at Thibodaux, Central Lafourche and South Lafourche stadiums, and that the eliminated line items were not strictly repair items but optional upgrades and additional work.
Committee members discussed the trade-offs. "Some of this work still needs to be done, but we have to push this work to other priority projects," a committee member said, urging caution that removing items now saves money only by deferring maintenance. The committee voted to accept the recommended eliminations and the resulting $2,135,999.79 credit.
Vado described the operational status of the projects: topside repair materials have been placed in many areas; underside chipping and column preparations are ongoing; anode installation and formwork continue at Central Lafourche. He and staff said the deletion list is documented in the meeting packet and on the district website.
The committee’s action reduces current contract spending but, staff warned, will likely require future allocation of district construction funds to address deferred items such as electrical upgrades, LED light transitions and concrete repairs adjacent to tracks and stadium walkways.
The motion to accept the change order was made and seconded and passed by voice vote. The committee did not identify specific new funding sources at the meeting; staff said they expect to return to the committee with options when funding becomes available.
