Cedarburg School Board approves new committee structure after two amendment bids fail

The Cedarburg School Board on May 21 approved a new School Board Committee Structure and Special Assignments, adopting the main proposal by a 5–2 vote after rejecting two amendments that would have converted alternate positions to primary seats.

Board member Elizabeth Charland moved to approve the proposed committee structure and Dr. Nicholas Silvaggi seconded the motion. During discussion, Board member Connie Kincaide moved an amendment to remove herself as an alternate on the Policy Committee and include herself as a primary Policy Committee member; she provided the board with a written rationale for that amendment. Board member Kate Erickson later moved a separate amendment to move herself from alternate to primary on the Curriculum Committee. Each amendment failed on a 2–5 vote. The main motion then passed 5–2, with Ms. Kincaide and Ms. Erickson voting no.

Board members and district staff framed the debate as a procedural governance decision about committee assignments rather than a policy change. No formal changes to committee duties or committee charters were detailed in the meeting minutes; the board adopted the membership assignments as presented. The board continued with other business after the vote, approving multiple routine contracts and plans later in the same meeting.
