The Porto Costa Transportation Affairs Committee unanimously approved changes to the city’s towing ordinance that staff said align local code with recent state amendments expanding authority to tow vehicles involved in reckless driving.
A committee member told the panel the state law now allows officers to tow a vehicle on a first reckless‑driving stop, to tow even when the vehicle owner is not the driver, and to require payment of towing and impound fees before a vehicle is returned. The staff member said he prepared draft language for ordinance 11.66 0.025 to reflect the state act and will work with City Attorney Jen Tate to finalize the wording.
No members of the public spoke on the item. Alder Gustafson moved to approve the ordinance language as drafted and Alder Dolan seconded. The motion passed unanimously (6–0).
The committee’s action sends the draft to council for final consideration; staff said they will coordinate with the city attorney’s office to ensure the ordinance text mirrors state requirements and returns to council as needed.
