Committee approves 90‑day no‑parking trials on Gridley and Portland to ease school pick‑up congestion
Summary
After hearing a resident's worries about displaced parking for teachers and visitors, the committee approved 90‑day trial no‑parking restrictions on Gridley and Portland during school pick‑up times; staff said item 2 applies to state roads and more details will follow when the measures return to committee.

The Wauwatosa City public works committee unanimously approved 90‑day trial no‑parking restrictions on Gridley and Portland avenues intended to improve safety during school pick‑up and drop‑off periods.
Engineering staff described paired proposals: on Gridley a south‑side no‑parking zone to maintain two‑way traffic and a north‑side morning/afternoon no‑parking window during school hours; Portland would receive similar morning/afternoon restrictions and a passing zone. "These are stand alone projects… These will be strictly just ADA improvement projects," staff said when describing work tied to state roads and traffic operations. (Staff later clarified that item 2 would apply to state roads.)
Resident Lauren, who identified herself as living at 7916 Gridley, told the committee that reducing curbside parking would push teachers and visitors into neighboring streets and could make it harder for residents and family to find parking. "My mom just got a ticket for parking in front of our garage the other day… the street parking is really important for us," she said.
Committee members asked staff to report back on whether the trials would delay or affect other scheduled projects; staff agreed to provide that information. The committee took the two items together, moved approval, and passed the recommended 90‑day trials unanimously. The measures will return to committee for evaluation before any permanent change.
