Students showcase Career Development Program, student recycling project; board honors retiring aide

Students and teachers in the district's Career Development Program (CDP) gave the board a walkthrough of internship activities and community placements at the March 11 meeting, demonstrating hands-on work such as mail sorting at the district office, PACE lab technology tasks, cafe operations and garden projects.
Middle-school CDP teacher Bridal Lamontia and high-school CDP teacher Annie McKenna thanked the board and administration for ongoing support that enabled students to gain real-world skills and social connections through internships. Students described tasks including prepping mailings, cooking and a school cafe that charges $1 per pretzel and returns proceeds to the program.
Student presenter Cece Farr, who said she had returned funds to schools from redeemed recyclables, told the board: "I've been collecting bottles and cans from West End and North for 6 months. And in that time, I've already made over a $100 for the schools. That's 2,171 bottles and cans that are now being recycled into something new instead of being incinerated or going to a landfill." She encouraged staff and community members to donate recyclables at a March 27 collection at West End teacher parking lot.
The board also read and adopted a retirement resolution for Jane Smithwick, a West End Elementary School aide, recognizing 10 years of service and accepting her retirement effective June 26, 2026. The resolution thanked Smithwick for her service to students and families and invited her to be photographed with the board.
What's next: Teachers invited board members and community to visit CDP classrooms and the district will post collection and program updates on school communications channels.
