Suffield board holds off on major middle-school capital requests pending build-or-renovation study

The Suffield Board of Education on Nov. 3 discussed FY27 capital project priorities and opted not to include major Suffield Middle School items in the December submittal while the district evaluates renovation versus new construction.
Superintendent Matt Dunbar said Colliers toured Suffield Middle School to assess whether it can be renovated “as new” and that the selected architect firm will develop educational specifications ahead of a likely referendum about a year from now. He said a meeting with collaborating districts and Tecton Architects will take place to determine potential spaces and program needs for special education.
Director of Facilities Larry Plano and Business Manager Eric Remington reviewed the ACCE priority list and said the Board can revise its submission at the Nov. 20 Finance and Facilities Subcommittee meeting before formally approving the FY27 requests at the Dec. 1 Board meeting. Board Chair Maureen Sattan noted the town hall annex has been identified as a potential site for an in-house special education program.
Board members discussed prioritization of HVAC and technology projects across schools and the need to keep middle-school priorities visible to the community while the longer-term decision is developed. No capital requests were approved at the meeting; the Board will return to the item at subcommittee and future Board meetings.
