Missoula County commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding with Salish Kootenai College on March 24 to launch a pilot summer internship program that will place a cohort of students in county departments.
The MOU, introduced during the county's administrative meeting, outlines roles and responsibilities for the college and Missoula County and establishes a cohort-based model aimed at easing students' transition into public-sector work and increasing county capacity.
"It's a very exciting opportunity for our students at Salish Kootenai College to engage with county government," said Dustin Hutchins, identified in the transcript as the career services director at Betis Casey, who described strong interest from students in tribal governance, social work and education. Hutchins said the first cohort will be "about five students."
The chair praised staff for building the program "from scratch" and thanked Hutchins and county staff for their work. Commissioners voted to approve the MOU without recorded public opposition.
County staff said the pilot is designed as a cohort experience with cross-department rotations; the MOU sets out administrative roles and expectations but does not specify long-term hiring commitments. Staff will proceed with program launch and return to the commission with implementation details if additional approvals are required.
