A lawmaker presenting Senate Bill 179 asked the Senate Committee on Judiciary A to defer consideration of the measure, telling the panel it addresses a local problem in the city of Generate where, the presenter said, no qualified candidate lives within the territorial jurisdiction of the city court.
The presenter said multiple local stakeholders "are not on the same page" and that the bill is intended to bring stakeholders together to resolve the issue. "So until we resolve all of those local issues, I would humbly ask the committee not to advance this bill at this time," the presenter said.
The chair asked whether the presenter wanted a deferral and then moved to defer the bill; the committee voiced no objections and the matter was deferred.
The transcript contains no testimony from city officials or other stakeholders and does not record a formal vote tally on the deferral. The committee will consider the bill at a later meeting after the sponsor convenes local stakeholders as requested.
