Panel advances bill letting department issue commercial fishing gear licenses to nonresidents in some cases

Senate Bill 204 (carried by Sen. Lambert) was read and reported favorably by the Senate Committee on Natural Resources on March 18.
Sen. Lambert said the bill removes an exemption that had blocked issuance of certain gear licenses to nonresidents when the nonresident’s home state does not allow that gear. He said the change responds to an instance in which a Texas resident owning Louisiana waterfront property could not be sold a particular net because the gear was not sold in Texas.
Cole Garrett, general counsel for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, confirmed the department’s view that the bill simply allows legal Louisiana gear to be sold to nonresidents who own property and wish to use it in Louisiana. The committee reported SB204 favorably without objection; the transcript does not show a roll-call tally.
