Committee adopts amendment and advances bill removing Social Security numbers from certain fishing tags

Senate Bill 257 (read as by Sen. Myers) was amended and reported as amended by the Senate Committee on Natural Resources on March 18. The measure removes statutory requirements that certain fishing tags include the tag holder’s Social Security number.
Sen. Myers said the requirement is outdated and that the bill is a straightforward cleanup of antiquated statutory language dating back decades. The committee considered an amendment (976) that removes the Social Security requirement for mullet strike nets; the amendment was read and adopted without objection.
Cole Garrett, general counsel for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, told the committee the department supports protecting personal information and agreed there is no administrative need to retain Social Security numbers on those tags. The committee reported SB257 as amended.
