RACP-backed Colonial Hotel facade restoration and elevator replacements approved

The New York City Historical Architectural Review Board on March 12 approved a facade restoration and elevator work at 18 South George Street, the Colonial Hotel, a project the presenter said is supported by a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant.
Dylan Bauer of Royal Square Development said the project will include selective repointing, replacement of eroded brownstone sills with matching stone units and replacement of two elevator cars. "We received a RACP grant to restore the facade of the building," Bauer said, noting the work will cover both the east and south facades.
Board members reminded the applicant that the project will be subject to federal historic tax-credit guidelines and National Park Service review, meaning replacement units and mortar must be compatible with historic materials. Bauer said the team will follow those guidelines and indicated a preference for Whitmer Restoration as a contractor.
A motion to approve the application as submitted passed unanimously. Board members noted the layered oversight from federal and state historic-preservation programs and recorded that the project must comply with those requirements as it advances.
