The San Diego City Council opened its meeting with a series of proclamations and recognitions on March 25, including a proclamation designating Transgender Day of Visibility and the presentation honoring Captain Jeffrey Jordan on the occasion of his retirement after nearly three decades of law enforcement service.
Councilmember Bob Von Wilpert, who introduced the proclamation recognizing transgender neighbors, said the resolution was intended to celebrate ‘‘the lives, resilience, accomplishments of transgender and non-binary individuals’’ and to push back against national rhetoric that seeks to diminish their standing. Councilmember Whitburn underscored the city’s laws and long-standing protections for transgender residents.
In brief remarks, Captain Jeffrey Jordan reflected on his years of service, thanked family and colleagues and described his time in the San Diego Police Department as ‘‘an honor’’; the council presented him with a day in his honor and invited him and colleagues for a photo. Councilmembers also extended proclamations recognizing the 35th anniversary of the San Diego Housing Federation, the Arab Film Festival week and the 80th anniversary of the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet.
Council moved and approved the proclamations on the record during the morning session.
