A city or regional public‑safety representative described a traffic stop for vehicle code violations and said a K‑9 was requested to conduct a sniff. According to the briefing, officers located what was described as a significant amount of methamphetamine hidden in the vehicle. As an officer approached, the suspect produced a firearm and an officer‑involved shooting occurred; emergency responders transported the suspect to Mercy hospital, where the suspect later died.
The briefing said one officer sustained minor injuries in a fall; there were no reported injuries to members of the public. The California Highway Patrol Northern Division’s major accident investigation team is the lead criminal investigative agency because the incident occurred on the freeway. The briefing noted that involved officers have been placed on administrative leave pending internal inquiries, and the suspect’s name will be released by the county coroner when family notifications are completed.
