Niles Community Schools approves consent agenda, new courses and student trip

The Niles Community Schools regular meeting on Feb. 16, 2026, at Eastside Connections School approved the consent agenda and several motions affecting curriculum, finances and student activities. President Kyle Zelmer called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.; five board members were present and two were absent.
The board adopted motion 25/26-88, approving the consent agenda (minutes from the Feb. 2, 2026 regular meeting and payment of bills: General Fund checks 74171–74240 and vouchers V1402–V1448), with check 74235 excluded from that initial approval. The motion was moved by Dana Daniels and seconded by Josh Asmus and passed with five ayes from Asmus, Daniels, Fish, Johnson and Zelmer.
At the same meeting, the board approved General Fund check 74235 under motion 25/26-89 (moved by Dana Daniels; seconded by Paulette Johnson). The motion passed with four ayes (Dana Daniels, David Fish, Paulette Johnson, Kyle Zelmer); board member Josh Asmus abstained. Two members (Kelly Gaideski and Marcella Taylor) were recorded absent for both votes.
The board also approved an overnight field trip under motion 25/26-90 (moved by David Fish; seconded by Josh Asmus) to send students to the Business Professionals of America State Conference in Grand Rapids from March 12–15, 2026. The motion passed unanimously among members present.
Under motion 25/26-91 (moved by Dana Daniels; seconded by Josh Asmus), the board approved a slate of New Course Proposals to be made available in 2026–2027 pending sufficient student interest and enrollment. The courses approved were Pop Culture Studies; Introductory Veterinary Science; Freshman Connections; Intro to Speech and Media Production; Film Analysis: Adaptations and Interpretations; and Teaching II. Brooke Brawley had presented the course proposals earlier in the meeting on behalf of the Student Achievement Committee.
The meeting record shows standard roll-call voting for each motion; the body voted openly with the ayes listed for each motion. The meeting concluded with a later motion changing the location for the March 16 meeting and an adjournment at 6:45 p.m.
What happens next: course implementation depends on student interest and enrollment thresholds; the overnight trip will take place in March as approved; the board will meet March 16 at Howard-Ellis per the approved location change.
