Board hears that food‑service fund has lost reserve and technology needs could require $4.2M refresh

Nutrition staff told trustees that Fund 51, which is intended to be a self‑supporting proprietary account for school meals, has lost its cash reserve and is currently relying on the general fund to cash‑flow operations. The nutrition director said the district is examining multiple causes—paid meal debt, unpaid mill debt, lost instructional days and one‑time changes—and pledged outreach to families to increase free/reduced application completion.

Board members asked for modeling that shows what paid‑meal price would be necessary to avoid meal debt and to ensure that every child who needs a meal continues to be fed. The board and staff agreed any price discussions should proceed cautiously and include community engagement and protections so no child goes hungry.

Separately, technology staff said a four‑year life‑cycle refresh for student Chromebooks (approximately 10,000 devices) is estimated at about $4.2 million, and that device prices and parts costs are volatile. The technology director warned that nearly half the fleet will be out of warranty next year, with outsized repair volume and contractor costs; he said maintenance, repair throughput and support staff obligations are significant operational considerations beyond the device sticker price.

Administration said they will provide the board with options: a range of paid‑meal pricing scenarios, a food‑service model showing where the account breaks even, and technology procurement timing and total cost estimates so trustees can weigh trade‑offs in the May tentative budget.
