USDA equipment grant to fund $112,000 for Maple Winder City Home educational center and solar panels

Suzanne updated the Cheshire County Commission on March 19 that a USDA grant originating from a 2022 congressional directed spending request will be used as an equipment grant to complete improvements at the Maple Winder City Home property.
“We will be spending $112,000 before the September next year on various types of equipment, everything from refrigerators to shelving to desks, those types of things, furniture, fixtures for creating an educational center out of the farm,” Suzanne said. She added the grant also covers solar panels that will complete the project once installed.
Suzanne and the chair described prior delays and an evolved scope: the original request had included construction and 'envelope' work but funding timing and program rules shifted the award to equipment and training, which does not require a local match. Commissioners discussed budgeting and planning steps to make sure account numbers and oversight are in place to spend the funds this year.
Next steps: staff will set up an account line for the grant funds, continue procurement for equipment and track installation of solar panels with the expectation the project will be finished this summer if schedules permit.
